Joe Martin shows off his checkered flag in victory lane.
What won the race: Overtaking race-long pacesetter Michael Norris with four laps remaining, second-starting Joe Martin of Punxsutawney, Pa., bagged the $3,199 victory in Saturday’s RUSH Crate Late Model Series-sanctioned Billy Forney Memorial at Sharon Speedway. He finished 1.572 seconds ahead of the pole-starting Norris.
Quotable: "Michael (Norris) is a hell of a race car driver. He's younger than me, but I kind of idolize him," the 37-year-old Martin said. "I had a better car the whole night, but when it comes to the cushion there isn't a better driver in the whole country and I'll stick to that. He made it really tough for me and I should have led a lot more laps than I did. I got to race side-by-side with one of my favorite guys and that was cool."
Key notes: Martin, who finished second in the event in 2021 after Chub Frank passed him on the final lap, stole the lead from Michael Norris on lap 26 and led the final four circuits. ... The victory was his second RUSH win of the season after picking up the Bill Law Memorial in May at Stateline Speedway. ... Series point leader Logan Roberson of Waynesboro, Va., finished fourth. ... Jonathan Stockdale of Novelty, Ohio, scratched from the 30-lapper.
On the move: Daryl Charlier of Bulger, Pa., started eighth and finished third.
Winner's sponsors: Martin’s Rocket Chassis is sponsored by T&D Performance 24-Hour Towing, Berkshire Hathaway, Tuff Nuts and Weather Capital Sales.
