Brandon Overton earned $10,053 for Saturday's Rebel Yell win at Screven.
What won the race: Overtaking race-long leader and polesitter Zack Mitchell when Mitchell got into the turn-four wall on lap 47, three-time tour champ Brandon Overton of Evans, Ga., led the rest of Saturday's 53-lap Rebel Yell at Screven Motor Speedway for his 20th career Schaeffer's Southern Nationals victory. Overton earned $10,053 after a tight battle with Mitchell with barely a tenth of a second separating them for several laps. Wil Herrington ended up 3.111 seconds behind in second while Mitchell, who led by six-second margins in the first half of the race, slipped back to finish third.
Quotable: “I was about to run third. I couldn’t get back around Jordy (Nipper),” said Overton. “I chose the bottom on the restart and Jordy got me on the top and I was like, ‘Damn, I’m gonna be stuck for a little bit.’ I seen it kinda rubbering up around the top and I knew I had to hurry up and get back up there.”
Key notes: Zack Mitchell, who led 46 laps, was chasing his first career tour victory but his tires faded late. ... Jordy Nipper of Gray, Ga., started 11th and got by Overton on a restart to hold the second spot midrace, but slipped back to finish fourth. ... The first start was scuttled when Jensen Ford's turn-two spin collected Carson Ferguson with a few other drivers getting a piece of the mess. ... Six other cautions slowed the action (a turn-three scramble on lap three that damaged the cars of Dale Timms John Henderson; Brad Basey's lap-14 issues on the backstretch; the lap-15 restart for a three-car tangle exiting turn four involving Johnny Pursley and Parker Martin; lap 18 when third-running Chris Ferguson slowed; on lap 36 when Jason Garver stopped; and lap 36 again for Will Roland's flat tire). ... The Redd Griffin-owned track hosted the series for the 15th time. ... The track is working on the construction of a new tower on the backstretch (which, when complete, the track will reverse the original frontstretch and backstretch).
On the move: Runner-up Wil Herrington of Hawkinsville, Ga., started 12th.
Winner's sponsors: Overton’s Wells Motorsports Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Clements Race Engine and sponsored by CrossFit Overton, E-Z-Go, Big Dog Stump & Tree, R.W. Powell Construction, Angry Elephant Tattoos & Piercings, Convenient Lube, Dirt Mafia, Allstar Performance, Penske Racing Shocks, Hoosier by Brian and Topnotch Kustom Koncepts.
