Michael Chilton celebrates his victory at Atomic Speedway.
What won the race: Inheriting the lead on lap 33 when race-long pacesetter Steve Casebolt headed pitside with a flat tire, Michael Chilton of Salvisa, Ky., paced the remaining circuits to capture Saturday night’s 40-lap Valvoline Iron-Man Northern Series feature at Atomic Speedway. Chilton controlled the final laps to beat R.J. Conley by 3.133 seconds for the $7,500 winner's check.
Key notes: Chilton’s second Iron-Man victory of 2022 — both in Northern action — was the 10th of his career on the Valvoline-sponsored tours, moving him one ahead of the late Jackie Boggs as the circuit’s all-time winningest driver. … Casebolt led the first 33 laps from the pole position before developing a flat tire under a red flag. He was relegated to a 17th-place finish. … The lap-33 stoppage resulted from a tangle involving Josh Rice and Jared Hawkins, who both smashed into the styrofoam blocks protecting the wall just before turn three after Rice attempted a slider on Hawkins through turns one and two. … Rice’s rough ending came after he pitted twice for flat tires, first early in the race while running second and then when he climbed back to eighth. … Seventh-starting Rod Conley moved into the runner-up spot on the lap-33 restart and finished there. … Conley’s younger brother, R.J., raced in the top five throughout the race and finished third. … Slowed by six cautions flags and the lengthy red flag for cleanup of the Rice/Hawkins mess on lap 33; the race lasted 45 minutes with 11 competitors completing all 40 laps.
On the move: Andy Bond of Coolville, Ohio, started 17th and finished seventh.
Winner's sponsors: Chilton’s Rocket Chassis with a Bullock Race Engine is sponsored by Caton Industrial Painting, MKC Transport, Parkview Home Center, Equiplinc Austion Group, Edgewood Homes and C&C Red-Mix.
