What won the race: Making a rare Crate Late Model start, Jimmy Owens of Newport, Tenn., scored an emotional flag-to-flag victory worth $5,069 in Saturday’s 40-lap Ty Veuleman Memorial at Sabine Speedway. The 50-year-old star emerged triumphant by 1.138 seconds over Cade Dillard driving a car formerly piloted by the late Veuleman, a 17-year-old from Florien, La., who died in November 2020 in a freak roadside mishap.
Key notes: Owens is a close friend of Veuleman’s father Stacy, who this year ended a seven-year absence from driving to assume his late son’s seat. Stacy asked Owens to run the Ty Veuleman Memorial in his stead. … Owens also was a mentor to Ty Veuleman, who died when a 1972 Ford pickup truck fell or rolled onto his right side as he was trying to get it started on a road near a farm his family had purchased to help further the youngster’s racing career. … Dillard grabbed second place on the race’s final lap from polesitter Shane Hebert, who settled for a third-place finish after failing to lead a lap. … Five cautions slowed the 29-minute race with 13 drivers completing all 40 laps. … Hebert and Owens earned $800 victories in Friday’s pair of 20-lap preliminary features.
On the move: Robbie Starnes of Baytown, Texas, started 16th and finished sixth.
Winner's sponsors: Owens's Stacy Veuleman-owned car carries sponsorship from Veuleman Trucks & Salvage, Veuleman Sawmill & Lumber, Macy Veuleman Music, Griffith Truck Equipment and Pro Fun Baits.
Points chase: Stacy Veuleman of Florien, La., leads Sabine’s Crate Late Model standings.
