Ryan Unzicker heads to victory at Peoria Speedway.
What won the race: Ryan Unzicker of El Paso, Ill., regained the lead from Jason Feger on the 32nd lap and never looked back to capture Saturday's 50-lap Garry Swibold Memorial at Peoria Speedway. Unzicker collected $5,098 for his second win at Peoria in the last seven months after previously claiming September's $7,500 Illinois State Championship.
Quotable: “After getting the car banged up in the opener at (Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 in Pevely, Mo.) last week, it was nice to bounce back with a win this week at Peoria," Unzicker said. "Had a great race there and got the job done. Thank you to my wife, son, crew, and all our sponsors for making it possible. We’ll carry this momentum into the upcoming weekend.”
Key notes: Unzicker led twice for a total of 34 laps. ... Brian Shirley of Chatham, Ill., paced laps 8-11 before being overtaken by Unzicker. Shirley slipped as low as fourth before rebounding to finish second, 0.913 of a second back. ... Tommy Sheppard Jr. finished third aboard a car owned by Bob Gardner while Gardner finished a spot back in fourth. Gardner led the first seven laps from the pole after winning the $1,000 dash. ... Last year's Swibold Memorial winner Justin Reed finished fifth. ... Jason Feger led laps 28-31 before experiencing a flat right-rear tire while running second on lap 45, forcing him to tag the field. He ended up sixth. ... Lap leaders: Gardner 1-7; Shirley 8-11; Unzicker 12-27, 32-50; Feger 28-31. ... The race honored the late father of racer Cole Swibold of Fairview, Ill. ... The 50-lapper was slowed by eight cautions and lasted 32 minutes, with eight competitors completing the entire distance. ... Peoria hosts another a $5,000-to-win show next weekend.
