Tanner English dominated Friday's first preliminary feature, collecting $4,000 at Talladega Short Track.
What won the race: Tanner English of Benton, Ky., used an inside move out of turn four to take the lead from Drake Troutman on lap two and paced the remaining distance to capture Friday's first 20-lap World of Outlaws Case Late Model Series semifeature at Talladega Short Track. English earned $4,000 and drew the pole starting position for Saturday's dash, which will set the top-six starting spots in the $50,000-to-win Alabama Gang 100 feature.
Quotable: “This place reminds me a lot of my, ya know, kind of home track, Clarksville Speedway,” English said. “This red dirt, this small, tight bullring ... I’m pretty comfortable here and just glad to bust off a good qualifying lap. Start on the front row, that’s what it’s all about. We’re happy.”
Key notes: Brian Shirley moved past Troutman for the runner-up position on lap five and finished 1.403 seconds behind the victor to grab the race's second transfer spot into Saturday's 100-lapper. ... After leading the first lap from the pole, Troutman, a 17-year-old from Hyndman, Pa., finished third. He pulled alongside Shirley down the backstretch on lap 15 but couldn't complete a pass. ... Chris Madden advanced two positions to finish fifth. ... The caution-free race was run with light drizzle falling and lightning flashing in the distance. ... The race lasted five minutes with 15 drivers completing all 20 laps.
On the move: Wil Herrington of Hawkinsville, Ga., started 21st and finished 16th.
