Brandon Overton gets rolling before his semifeature victory at Talladega.
What won the race: Brandon Overton of Evans, Ga., led from flag-to-flag off the pole to claim a $4,000 victory in Friday's third and final World of Outlaws Case Late Model Series semifeature at Talladega Short Track. A $3,800 unsanctioned Super Late Model race winner at TST last September, Overton drew the fourth starting position for Saturday's dash, which will determine the top-six starting spots in the $50,000-to-win Alabama Gang 100 main event.
Quotable: “(I feel) way better than I felt the last couple of weeks, for sure,” Overton said. “The track is different — I’m obviously way better at this Talladega than I am at the normal one. I just appreciate all the fans coming out. This is really neat. I’ve seen so many (NASCAR) superstars walking through the pits, so it’s a fun weekend and I'm looking forward to tomorrow.”
Key notes: Gordy Gundaker utilized the lap-13 restart to move past Garrett Smith for the runner-up position and finished 2.124 seconds behind Overton while locking into Saturday's 100-lapper. ... Garrett Smith started and finished third but ran in second for laps 4-13 ... WoO rookie Todd Cooney advanced six positions to finish fourth after slipping past Brandon Sheppard on lap 19. ... Stormy Scott gained five spots to finish sixth. ... Nick Hoffman failed to complete a qualifying lap after hitting a rut, bicycling the car and stopping on the track after a bumpy landing. But he stormed through the field from the 20th starting spot to finish seventh. ... Caution flags flew on lap eight for Dustin Walker (broken driveshaft) and lap 13 when Michael Page overdrove the entrance of turn three and made contact between the corners with fourth-running Tyler Millwood, sending them both spinning. Millwood was the last driver to complete all 20 laps while Page pulled off and finished 15th. ... Dylan Knowles ran second in the early laps but hopped the cushion on lap three, causing him to fall out of the top 10 before retiring on lap seven. ... The race lasted nine minutes with 14 drivers completing all 20 laps.
On the move: Nick Hoffman of Mooresville, N.C., started 20th and finished seventh.
