Stormy Scott captured his first DIRTcar Summer Nationals victory.
What won the race: Stealing the lead exiting turn four on the final lap, Stormy Scott of Las Cruces, N.C., earned $10,000 Saturday at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 for his first career DIRTcar Summer Nationals victory. The low-running Scott went from third to first on the final lap and edged Winger by 0.224 of a second at the third-mile oval while Drake Troutman finished third.
Quotable: "I felt like the longer we went with that run, them running that top, they were getting their tires hotter and hotter," Scott said. "At one point, they drove away just a tad, but I just kept cool and tried keeping my tires cool. They started coming back to me and I knew that if we go (without a late caution) and hit that bottom (in turn four) and not mess up, that I at least had a shot."
Key notes: Scott won his first feature since Jan. 28, 2021, in Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series action at East Bay Raceway Park in Gibsonton, Fla. ... Runner-up Ashton Winger, a winner four nights earlier at Davenport (Iowa) Speedway, led laps 25-39. ... Winger and Drake Troutman were battling for the lead on the outside when Scott snuck past on the inside. ... Shannon Babb led laps 14-24 but drivetrain issues forced him out after after losing the lead to Winger on the lap-25 restart. ... Polesitter Logan Martin led the first 13 laps but faded eighth. ... Four yellows slowed the action, including one on lap 25 for Babb's demise. ... Seventh-running Daryn Klein slowed on lap 27. ... Debris halted the race on lap 25. ... Jason Suhre spun in turn two for a lap-three caution.
On the move: Tyler Stevens of Searcy, Ark., started 18th and finished ninth.
Winner's sponsors: Scott’s Rancho Milagro Racing Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Clements Racing Engine and sponsored by Mesilla Valley Transportation, Top of the World Ranch, VP Racing Fuels, Eagle Moon Hemp, Ramirez Motorsports, Race Ranch Clothing, Allstar Performance and Slicker Graphics.
