Jake Knowles picked up $3,000 Saturday at East Alabama.
What won the race: Jake Knowles of Tyrone, Ga., collected his first career Chevrolet Performance Super Late Model Series victory, holding off Hall of Famer Ronnie Johnson of Chattanooga, Tenn., in the final 10 laps to collect $3,000.
Quotable: “My dad was signaling me that my big lead was going away, and it was pretty frustrating being stuck behind a lapped car that ran me all over the racetrack,” Knowles said. “I looked up at the scoreboard with 10 laps to go, and saw the No. 5 up there in second, and I knew I could be in trouble.”
Key notes: Knowles survived a first-lap spin that triggered a backstretch pileup, but he was restored to the pole because no laps were completed. ... Adam Martin, celebrating his 30th birthday, led the first lap before Knowles led the rest of the way. ... Knowles's victory came in only his second start of 2014; he finished third in the tour's March 22 stop at Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, Ala. ... Dingus Griffin of Ohatchee, Ala., was victorious in Talladega's event; he finished fifth at East Alabama. ... The feature lineup was set via time trials. ... Ross Martin of Talladega, Ala., scratched following hot laps. ... The track is in the process of putting new clay on the track, a project expected to be completed by the end of April. ... The race was the first since the series limited RPMs to 7,000 (down from 7,300) on CT 525 engines; the series said the change will improve competition and increase the longevity of the all-aluminum crate powerplants.
On the move: Johnson worked from 10th to take home runner-up honors.
Winner's sponsors: Knowles steers a Rocket Chassis with sponsorship from Cedartown Electric, GW Performance, Rudy Woods Appliance & Home Furnishings and JTS Converters.
