What won the race: Using the outside to pass race-long leader Cody Overton in a three-wide move out of turn four, fourth-starting Mark Whitener of Middleburg, Fla., led the final 29 laps to win Saturday's $5,000 Crate Racin' USA feature at Golden Isles Speedway. Extending his series points lead, Whitener recorded his third CRUSA victory of the season and his second in a row.
Key notes: Whitener, driving a new Longhorn Chassis, won his third series race at Golden Isles over the last two seasons. ... Sixth-starting Clay Harris, the winner of July 8's Crate Late Model race at GIS, moved into the runner-up position on lap 28 and pressured Whitener in the closing laps, finishing 0.477 of a second back. ... Fifth-starting Trynt Lloyd ran as high as second before being overtaken by Harris and settling for third. ... Jeremy Faircloth moved into fifth on lap 22 and completed the top five. ... Jordan Yawn advanced five positions and finished eighth. ... Cody Overton led the first 11 laps from the pole before drawing the race's only caution with a flat left rear on lap 19; Overton changed the tire and completed eight more laps before pulling off. ... Trailing heavy smoke, fourth-running Hunter Peacock pulled off during the lap-19 caution for Overton and called it a night. ... Originally scheduled as a two-day event paying $10,000-to-win before rain condensed it to one day, Saturday's feature lasted 16 minutes, with 16 competitors completing 40 laps.
On the move: Jackson Hise of Ocala, Fla., started 12th and finished sixth.
