Nick Anvelink led only the final lap Saturday at Cedar Lake Speedway.
What won the race: Sixth-starting Nick Anvelink of Bonduel, Wis., snuck past race-long leader James Giossi on the final lap Saturday at Cedar Lake Speedway for a $5,000 victory capping the Month of Money at the 3/8-mile oval. Anvelink came out on top of a three-wide battle with two laps remaining with the runner-up Giossi and third-finishing Darrell Nelson. Pole-starting Jake Redetzke finished fourth in the 30-lapper, delayed a week by rain.
Quotable: “We were looking forward to coming here last week and you got rained out,” Anvelink said. “James (Giossi) had a good car, that end of that race could’ve been all three of ours, I mean any one of us could’ve come out of there in the right spot. I just got a good run off of (turn) two there, I seen James cutting his corner off and that gave me an opportunity to get a little more speed into the corner on the top, so it gave me a good run down the back chute and he left enough (room) barely that I could squeeze through, but I bounced her off the wall a little bit and I don’t think I touched him, I hope we didn’t.”
Key notes: Anvelink matched the $5,000 he won at Cedar Lake in June's Masters preliminary feature. ... He notched his fourth overall victory of 2023, including two on the Wabam Dirt Kings Tour. ... The second-starting James Giossi was 0.616 of a second behind at the checkers after leading 29 laps. ... Cory Mahder of Elk Mound, Wis., made a rare Late Model start in finishing 17th; he was fourth in the modified feature. ... Steve Laursen drew the race's first caution when he spun on lap nine and pulled off. ... A.J. Diemel spun to bring out the second yellow on lap 23, ending his night. ... Seventh-running Chad Mahder slowed on the ensuing restart attempt and required a push back to the pits. ... The fourth and final caution flew when Jordan Yaggy spun on lap 27, setting up a three-lap dash to the finish. ... Sixteen drivers completed 30 laps. ...Jesse Glenz scratched from the Late Model feature lineup. ... While battling for second in the second heat, Mike Mullen spun and collected Sam Mars; neither driver was injured but Mullen was done for the night and Mars failed to transfer from the consolation race. ... Cedar Lake hosts the World of Outlaws Case Late Model Series on Aug. 3-5 for the $50,000-to-win USA Nationals.
On the move: Jake Miller of Somerset, Wis., started 20th and finished 10th.
