Darrell Nelson heads to victory Thursday at Halvor Lines Speedway.
What won the race: Overtaking early pacesetter Harry Hanson on lap 13, fast qualifier and pole-starting Darrell Nelson of Hermantown, Minn., paced the final 28 circuits to win Thursday’s 51st Silver 1000 at Halvor Lines Speedway. He finished 3.610 seconds ahead of Hanson in the Structural Buildings WISSOTA Challenge Series feature and collected more than $3,300 including lap money.
Quotable: “I had a little trouble with the old-timer, Harry (Hanson) there,” Nelson said. “It reminded me of the old days down there every Sunday. He was good and I had to slow down a little bit and try to get around him and it worked out good. God this is awesome, I never expect to be here; I mean I always say that, but I’m getting older and tell you what, this is awesome.”
Key notes: After winning the event in 2006, '13 and '16, Nelson recorded his fourth Silver 1000 triumph and his eighth career series victory. … Second-starting Hanson, of Eveleth, Minn., took home upwards of $2,000 for his runner-up finish, after bonuses were awarded for laps led. ... Derek Vesel improved two positions and completed the podium. … Series points leader Pat Doar of New Richmond, Wis., finished sixth. ... Fresh off Sunday's tour win at Granite City Motor Park, Jeff Massingill gained four spots and finished seventh. ... Sam Mars advanced 12 positions and finished 11th. ... Consolation winner Todd Frank of Montrose, Iowa, brought out a caution on the sixth circuit and needed a tow. … Eighth-starting Ryan Mikkelson of Alexandria, Minn., never completed a lap after lap-one contact drew the first yellow. ... Thursday's 20-minute feature saw 19 drivers complete 40 laps and 21 running at the finish.
On the move: Jeff Provinzino of Hibbing, Minn., started 21st and finished 10th.
Winner's sponsors: Nelson’s MB Customs Race Car is sponsored by Badget Excavating, Tarnowski Bros., Dave’s Automatic Transmission, Amsoil, Dave Lucia Trucking and Willow River Saloon.
