Jeff Massingill celebrates his last-lap win at Grand Rapids.
What won the race: Going from third to first on the bottom, seventh-starting Jeff Massingill of Keewatin, Minn., overtook polesitter race-long leader Kevin Burdick on the final lap Friday at Grand Rapids Speedway for his second Structural Buildings WISSOTA Challenge Series victory in six days. Massingill edged Burdick by 0.048 of a second at the checkers with Ryan Mikkelson third.
Quotable: "Kevin was fast. I didn't have anything for him. It was all dependent on lap traffic and it was just getting really bad down there and he kind of slid and I just was able to get a run," Massingill said. "It was one hell of a race.”
Key notes: Topping his first career WISSOTA Classic, it's Massingill's third career series triumph. ... Sixth-starting Mikkelson, of Alexandria, Minn., steadily climbed through the field and took second on lap 37 before Massingill passed him and Burdick on the final lap; Mikkelson finished only 0.604 of a second behind the race winner. ... Five-time feature winner at Grand Rapids, second-starting Jeff Provinzino slipped in the second half and finished fourth. ... Kyle Peterlin and Jake Redetzke each improved three positions, finishing seventh and eighth. ... Series points leader Pat Doar started and finished ninth. ... A night after finishing second at Halvor Lines Speedway, third-starting Harry Hanson faded to finish 11th. ... Friday's 40-lap feature was slowed by two incidents, including a seven-minute red flag for a multicar incident on the opening lap. The 22-minute main event saw 17 drivers complete the entire distance and 20 running at the finish.
