What won the race: Taking the lead from race-long pacesetter Cla Knight with an outside move entering turn three on lap 22, third-starting Ashton Winger of Hampton, Ga., paced the final 29 circuits to win Friday's $10,000 Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series feature at Lavonia Speedway. Winger, the 2023 DIRTcar Summer Nationals champion, notched his 11th overall victory of the season and his first series triumph.
Quotable: "I seen (the track surface) got really, really dirty out there in (turn) two, so I’m glad I (made the winning move) when I did, because I don't know if I would have been able to do that if I would have waited any longer," Winger said.
Key notes: Winger is the 11th series winner in 13 races. ... Second-starting Cla Knight led the first 21 laps before being overtaken by Winger and finishing 0.935 of a second back; Knight won the second heat race when leader Joseph Joiner slowed after taking the white flag, mistaking it for the checkers. ... Pole-starting David McCoy ran as high as second in the early laps before settling for third. ... Completing the top five, Joseph Joiner inished one spot ahead of series points leader Josh Putnam as both contend for the inaugural series championship. ... Bo Slay spun on lap 10 to draw the race's only caution. ... Friday's 17-minute feature saw 12 drivers complete 50 laps and 14 running at the finish. ... Benji Hicks scratched for the evening after hot laps.
On the move: Wil Herrington of Hawkinsville, Ga., started 17th and finished 11th.
Winner's sponsors: Winger’s Jeff Mathews Motorsports Rocket Chassis is powered by an Andy Durham Racing Engine and carries sponsorship from Johnny Doan Plumbing, RV Select Inc., Keyser Manufacturing, Integra Shocks, Angry Elephant Tattoo and Piercing, FK Rod Ends, Super K Express, Hoosier Tire, Simpson Race Products, Collins Signs, DirtCarLift.com, VP Race Fuels, Boswell Oil and WrapTeck.
