What won the race: Inheriting the point when race-long leader Daulton Wilson was felled by terminal trouble under the hood on lap 43, Ricky Thornton Jr. of Chandler, Ariz., led the remaining circuits to win Friday's 12th annual Boone Coleman Memorial Gator 50 at Portsmouth Raceway Park. Thornton beat veteran R.J. Conley to the finish for the $10,000 top prize.
Key notes: Thornton tallied his 17th overall five-figure payday of the season and gained valuable track time before Saturday's $15,000-to-win Lucas Oil Series-sanctioned River Days Rumble feature at PRP. His history of success at the track includes winning the $100,000 Dirt Track World Championship in 2021. ... Second-starting Wilson, of Fayetteville, N.C., settled for seventh after leading the first 43 laps. ... Seventh-starting R.J. Conley, a four-time track champion and four-time feature winner at Portsmouth this season, moved into second on the lap-44 restart. ... Three-time Boone Coleman Memorial winner Brandon Fouts improved three positions and completed the podium. ... Shannon Thornsberry gained three spots and rounded out the top five. ... The feature was slowed by five cautions and lasted 34 minutes, with five competitors completing the distance and six running at the finish. ... Garrett Smith and Ben Adkins scratched.The event honored Boone Coleman of West Portsmouth, Ohio, who founded Boone Coleman Construction in 1957 and then founded Portsmouth Raceway Park 33 years later; Coleman died on Feb. 4, 2011, at the age of 77.
