Hometown driver Kyle Peterlin in Hibbing Raceway’s victory lane.
What won the race: Third-starting Kyle Peterlin of Hibbing, Minn., took the lead for good with an outside move around Harry Hanson on a lap-13 restart and led the final 28 circuits to win Saturday's $3,000 45th annual Labor Day Shootout opener at his home track. Peterlin captured his seventh overall victory of the season and his second on the Structural Buildings WISSOTA Challenge Series, both coming at Hibbing Raceway.
Quotable: “(The car) was just fantastic. It was a great race with Harry (Hanson) for a while there,” Peterlin said. “We rubbed each other, but that’s part of racing, he was trying really hard to win. The last restart (lap 13) we had, I knew the bottom was already taking rubber because I got by Harry and then I went to the top and he passed me right back. I really made an aggressive restart and that’s what it took to win it.”
Key notes: Peterlin led twice for 30 laps (10-11, 13-40) to secure his fourth career WISSOTA Challenge Series triumph. ... Ninth-starting Ryan Mikkelson secured his second straight third place finish after completing the podium in Friday's stop at Grand Rapids (Minn.) Speedway. ... Jeff Provinzino improved three positions and finished fourth. ... Entering having won two of the last three series races, second-starting Jeff Massingill slipped to finish ninth. ...
