Jason Feger takes the checkered flag to win at Fairbury on Sept. 2.
What won the race: Second-starting Jason Feger of Bloomington, Ill., took the lead from Ryan Unzicker on lap 12 and led the final 29 laps to win Saturday’s MARS Championship Series main event at Fairbury Speedway. Feger pocketed $5,000 for winning his third series race in a row and second at Fairbury this season.
Quotable: “We went harder on tires than everybody else that I saw anyway … got ‘em two nights in a row that way,” said Feger, who won at Farmer City on Friday. “We just kinda got pinned there on that bottom and they were having a good race and I just let it come back to me. I was wanting to get on that top pretty bad and when it came open I was able to get up there and make it work.”
Key notes: Feger finished 0.948 of a second ahead of Unzicker. … Unzicker, of El Paso, Ill., led laps 1-2 and 8-11. … After leading laps 3-7, Mike Mataragas of Dekalb, Ill., retired on lap 36 and was credited with 18th. … The race was slowed by three cautions: one on the opening lap; a lap-12 spin by Brian Dively; and a third when sixth-running Kevin Weaver slowed to a stop on lap 37. … The MARS Championship Series concluded its Labor Day weekend doubleheader with Feger swepping the weekend and winning his third straight series race. ... After going without a win at Fairbury since 2010, Feger now has two victories there this season. He won May’s $5,000 series race as well. … It was the 14th-ever series visit to Fairbury. … Friday’s runner-up Shannon Babb of Moweaqua, Ill., finished eighth.
