What won the race: Grabbing the lead on the opening lap from his outside front row starting spot, Ricky Weiss of Headingly, Manitoba, went on to score a flag-to-flag victory in Sunday’s 30-lap Earl Baltes Classic at Eldora Speedway. The Canadian earned $5,000 for his triumph in the event’s 15th running, beating Tripp Gerrald of Lexington, Ky., by 2.290 seconds.
Quotable: “It’s tough here with no (signal) sticks. I couldn’t really see Shawn’s signals there,” Weiss said, referring to his crew member Shawn Gage. “I was trying to look up at the camera and a few times they snuck it out on the Raceceiver, they said, ‘Rick slow down,’ you know. I kinda figured we were pretty good. Every time the caution come out we were right into lapped traffic there. Just hats off to everybody that supports this car.”
Key notes: Gerrald moved into second on lap three and stayed there for the remainder of the distance. ... The race was slowed by three cautions. … Second-running Logan Nickerson and third-running Jason Jameson made contact in turn one on lap two, with Jameson spinning in turn two. Jameson didn’t go all the way around, but he was called for the caution and restarted in sixth; Nickerson went on to finish third and Jameson placed fourth. … Teenager Tristan Chamberlain finished seventh in his Eldora debut. ... Richie Stephens slowed on lap eight to draw the second caution. … The final yellow was for Nick Hoffman, who tagged the wall in turn three and had a flat right-front tire. Hoffman, who started 21st, was running ninth. … Casey Noonan pitted during the lap-eight caution with a flat right-rear tire, giving up ninth. ... Racer Dustin Nobbe's team was involved in an accident south of Eldora after the race; his race car trailer overturned at the U.S. 127 and State Route 47 intersection. The driver of the other car was treated for minor injuries, according to the Daily Advocate. … Eldora hosts the World 100 on Sept. 7-9.
On the move: Tyler Carpenter of Parkersburg, W.Va., started 20th and finished eighth.
