Nick Anvelink won the Legendary 100 weekend finale.
What won the race: Taking advantage when early pacesetter A.J. Diemel hopped the turn-two cushion on lap 24, second-starting Nick Anvelink of Bonduel, Wis., paced the final 12 laps to win Saturday's $3,000 18th annual Legendary 100 at Cedar Lake Speedway. Anvelink recorded his sixth career feature victory at Cedar Lake — his third this season — and his first Legendary 100 triumph.
Quotable: “Yeah it’s pretty cool, I seen a couple other guys being interviewed over the weekend that their Dads had won before here,” Anvelink said. “(Diemel) just got in, I think not quite (sideways) enough (on the turn-two cushion) and got his right-front over it a little bit and that kinda sucked because man, I was having a blast there. I seen Darrell (Nelson) dipping under us at the beginning and I’m like ‘this is gonna be insane here for (35) laps’ and you’re just trying to not make any mistakes at all because those guys are so good here.”
Key notes: In addition to winning Friday's first 25-lap qualifier, Anvelink secured $5,000 victories in June's Masters prelim along with July's unsanctioned Limited Late Model race at Cedar Lake. ... Five-time Legendary 100 winner A.J. Diemel led the first 23 laps from the pole before a miscue while battling amongst lapped traffic sent him above the turn-two cushion and back to fourth; Diemel continued to backslide for the remainder of the race, finishing 10th. ... Fifth-starting Ashley Anderson following Anvelink by Diemel on lap 24 and trailed him the rest of the way, finishing 0.780 of a second back. ... After topping Thursday's second 25-lap semifeature, Darrell Nelson started and finished third. ... Seventh-starting James Giossi passed Diemel on lap 25 and finished fourth. ... Following his victory in Friday's second 25-lap prelim, Jesse Glenz regained fifth on lap 28 and completed the top five. ... Saturday's 10-minute feature was completed without incident and saw 15 drivers complete 35 laps, with 21 running at the finish.
On the move: Nick Panitzke of Lonsdale, Minn., started 11th and finished sixth.
