What won the race: Staving off a late-race charge from Thomas Lewis, second-starting Dusty Jones of LaGrange, Ga., led all 40 laps to win Sunday's $7,500 unsanctioned Limited Late Model portion of the 51st annual Alabama State Championships at East Alabama Motor Speedway. Jones took the checkers 0.77 of a second ahead of the sixth-starting Lewis.
Quotable: “First and foremost, I gotta thank everybody that’s ever helped me in my racing career getting to this point,” Jones said. “Here lately, it’s been kinda up and down, but Dennis (Hale) gave me this opportunity earlier this year and we kinda just put something together. I’ve been coming down here for 13 years straight trying to do this and I always said if I (won), then I’d probably retire after that, but I doubt it.”
Key notes: Fourth-starting Rucker Orr ran as high as second in the early laps before rounding-out the podium. ... Making a rare Limited Late Model start, CRUSA points leader and 13th-starting Mark Whitener finished fourth after electing to change right-side tires under a lap-24 caution. ... Chad Wallace recovered from slowing to draw the first caution on lap seven and completed the top five. ... Thomas Mewborn improved 10 positions and finished sixth. ... After getting caught up in a multicar melee on lap 25, 12th-starting Logan Stinchcomb rebounded to finish seventh; the incident ended the race for pole-starting Joseph Brown who elected to pit from second under the previous stoppage. ... Jordy Nipper finished eighth after slowing on lap 24 with a flat right-rear. ... After competing at Magnolia (Miss.) Motor Speedway, Wil Herrington worked his way up to 12th before a hung throttle sent him off the track in turn two, ending his race. ... Sunday's 40-lap feature was slowed by six cautions and lasted 43 minutes, with 11 cars completing the distance and 12 running at the finish.
On the move: Steven Gaines of Smiths Station, Ala., started 21st and finished ninth.
