Ashton Winger reaps a $5,038 victory Friday at Talladega Short Track.
What won the race: Ashton Winger of Hampton, Ga., powered around front-row starter Tyler Millwood on lap 11 of 38 and never looked back to win Friday's Jerry Goodwin Challenge with the Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series at Talladega Short Track. Winger's victory worth $5,038 came 2.189 seconds over Millwood.
Quotable: "I wasn't real confident going into it. My times were way off in the heat race," Winger said in victory lane. "That's just how tricky this place is. ... This is a big weekend. I know there's a lot of people here. A lot of (NASCAR) guys here watching us, so it's cool those guys come over and see what we do. Our car was good. We were pretty maneuverable. ... It's because of all the great people we got."
Key notes: Winger's victory is his second in the last three HTF Super Dirt Series races, adding to Sept. 1's $10,000 triumph at Lavonia (Ga.) Speedway. ... Tyler Millwood of Kingston, Ga., led the opening 10 laps before Winger slipped to the lead. ... Third-finishing Wil Herrington of Hawkinsville, Ga., rebounded from a mechanical issue earlier in the night and a lap-eight collision. ... It was tough sledding for the series two points leaders, Joseph Joiner and Josh Putnam, who were the race's first two retirees. ... Four cautions slowed the 38-lap feature that lasted 29 minutes: lap eight for Putnam's single-car spin, lap-eight for a seven-car melee involving Herrington, the lap-eight restart for Joiner's single-car spin, and lap 21 for debris. ... Sixteen cars finished on the lead lap. ... Saturday’s Red Farmer Tribute finale at TST pays $9,700 to the winner. … The two-day program coincides with NASCAR’s weekend at Talladega Superspeedway. … Watch live at Hunt The Front TV.
On the move: Wil Herrington of Hawkinsville, Ga., started 21st and finished third.
