Mike Marlar all smiles for collecting Friday's $10,000 WoO victory at Atomic.
What won the race: Overtaking early race leader Nick Hoffman with a turn-three slider on lap nine, second-starting Mike Marlar of Winfield, Tenn., led the final 32 laps to win Friday's $10,000 Outlaw Invasion weekend opener at Atomic Speedway. Marlar captured his third World of Outlaws Case Late Model Series victory of the season and the 16th of his career.
Quotable: “I got real nervous (in lapped traffic) quite a bit out there,” Marlar said. “I didn’t mind seeing those yellows, that’s for sure; they really just kinda made it easy for me honestly, with that. The car felt good, but when you get in dirty air and they got that little dust coming off their tires, they just dirty the track up and then you ain’t got nothing to get ahold of. It was treacherous, but we got it done there.”
Key notes: Eighth-starting Jimmy Owens regained the runner-up spot on a lap-27 restart and trailed Marlar the rest of the way, finishing 1.502 seconds back. ... After leading the first eight laps from the pole, Hoffman, of Mooresville, N.C., settled for third. ... Bobby Pierce made a sixth-to-fourth move on a lap-38 restart and finished fourth; Pierce slipped as low as seventh after making contact with Brian Shirley multiple times, drawing two caution flags. The first yellow came when Shirley was forced off the track in turn two, then a failed slider by Pierce on the lap-26 restart sent Shirley spinning, bringing out the race's fourth caution; Shirley finished 15th. ... Brent Larson improved four positions and took fifth with a last-lap pass. ... Kyle Bronson gained four spots and finished seventh. ... Dennis Erb Jr. advanced 11 positions and finished eighth. ... Garrett Smith started 17th and finished ninth. ... After making contact several times on lap 38 and 39 while battling for fourth, Tanner English finished 10th and Cade Dillard faded to finish 16th with a flat tire. ... Brandon Sheppard rebounded to finish 14th after slowing from 10th with a flat right-rear on lap 18, drawing the race's first stoppage. ... Freddie Carpenter spun from 16th to bring out the fifth and final caution on lap 37, ending his night. ... Ryan Gustin lost a radiator on lap 26 while running fourth. ... Friday's 25-minute feature saw 22 drivers complete 40 laps. ... Atomic's weekend doubleheader concludes with Saturday's 50-lap, $15,000-to-win finale.
On the move: After losing a driveshaft while leading his heat race, Chris Madden of Gray Court, S.C., started 21st and finished sixth.
Winner's sponsors: Marlar’s Longhorn Chassis is sponsored by Delk Equipment, Petroff Towing, Tri-Rivers Enterprise (Mark and Kim Dotson), Can-Am Auto Salvage, Auto Parts 4 Less, Mesilla Valley Transportation, Capital Capsigns, VP Racing Fuels, Stanley Best Heating & Air, Midwest Sheet Metal and Bilstein Shocks.
