Joe Martin celebrates his $10,000 Bill Hendren Memorial victory.
What won the race: After losing the lead to Colton Flinner on a lap-36 restart, third-starting Joe Martin of Mayport, Pa., executed a last-lap, last-corner slider to regain the point at the exit of turn four and beat Flinner to the line by 0.160 of a second to win Saturday's $10,000 13th annual Bill Hendren Memorial at Pittsburgh's Pennsylvania Motor Speedway.
Quotable: “I knew we could run PPMS and, man, I mean we had a hotrod tonight,” Martin said. “Man for all the crap at the end there, I did not deserve to lose that race, we had the best car and my team did not deserve to lose that race. I lose races on double-file restarts often and I was bound and determined not to let it happen tonight. Colton (Flinner) got a good jump there, (double-file restarts are) interesting for the fans, I don’t like it.”
Key notes: Martin led twice for 33 laps (4-35, 40) to record his second RUSH Crate Late Model Series victory of the season — his first since May 26 at Outlaw (N.Y.) Speedway — and collected the richest payday of his career. … The eighth-starting Flinner, of Allison Park, Pa., led once for four laps (36-39) before being overtaken by Martin on the final lap. ... After finishing sixth in the Lucas Oil Series-sanctioned Pittsburgher, second-starting Max Blair made a last-lap pass to complete the podium. ... Brandon Burgoon led the first three laps from the pole before fading to finish fourth. ... Michael Norris slipped as low as eighth near the race's halfway mark before recovering to finish fifth. ... Teenage sensation Brock Pinkerous improved five positions and finished sixth. ... Ben Policz gained four spots and finished ninth. ... Jeremy Steele advanced 11 positions to place 11th. ... RUSH Series points leader Jeremy Wonderling started 20th and finished 13th. ... After winning Friday's $4,000 opener, Tim Shaffer finished 16th. ... Garret Paugh ran as high as third in the early laps before slowing from 15th on lap 34, drawing the race's third and final caution; PPMS track champion Cole Petrelle stopped under the same caution and retired from 17th. ... Saturday's 29-minute feature saw 15 drivers complete 40 laps and 23 running at the finish. ... Dan Lepro of Midway, Pa., led all 10 laps to win the non-qualifier race.
On the move: Kyle Lee of Mercersburg, Pa., started 19th and finished eighth.
