Ashton Winger with Oct. 6's payday of $5,000 at Swainsboro.
What won the race: Sliding underneath race-long leader Jimmy Owens at turn-four exit on the final lap, second-starting Ashton Winger of Hampton, Ga., nipped Owens at the line by 0.124 of a second to win Friday's $5,000 Southern Showcase opener at Swainsboro Raceway. Winger notched his third career Hunt The Front Super Dirt Series feature victory, all of them coming since Sept. 1 at Lavonia (Ga.) Speedway.
Quotable: “That was pure luck, that was actually probably the easiest that I drove through (turn) three the whole race,” Winger said. “I swear, I really just kinda settled in there and was gonna run second. It was a little dusty down there (in turn three) and it was hard to see, there was lapped cars three wide. The racing surface was awesome; I can tell you, me knocking the deck out is pretty normal, but here at Swainsboro, I’m sure it’s not a very good thing.”
Key notes: The pole-starting Owens, of Newport, Tenn., led the first 29 laps before being overtaken by Winger on the final lap; Owens explained he "didn't really know where to be on the track" and "waited too late and went in between both (the bottom and high line) on the final lap." ... Lucas Oil Series regular Brandon Overton moved into third on lap 16 and completed the podium. ... After winning last weekend's finale at Talladega Short Track, Ethan Dotson improved three positions and finished fifth. ... Wil Herrington gained five spots and finished seventh; Herrington will enter Saturday's $23,000-to-win regular season finale 22 points behind Joseph Joiner, who regained the series points lead by eight markers over Josh Putnam. ... The lone caution flew on lap 14 when 15th-running Chris Ferguson had a solo-spin in turn one. ... Friday's 30-lap feature lasted 11 minutes, with 19 drivers completing the distance and 22 running at the finish.
On the move: Joseph Joiner of Milton, Fla., started 17th and finished ninth.
