Don Shaw, who won in Vegas in 2012, grabbed another victory.
What won the race: Midwest interloper Don Shaw of Ham Lake, Minn., overtook 14th-starting R.C. Whitwell of Tucson, Ariz., on a mid-race restart and held off a last-ditch charge by Whitwell for his fourth career West Coast Shootout victory. Whitwell's car lost power exiting turn four heading for the checkers, but he finished second. Bobby Hogge IV of Salinas, Calif., who took the lead from Mike Kirby on the fifth lap, was out front on lap 15 but spun on the backstretch as Whitwell blew past.
Key notes: Bobby Hogge IV also spun leading last year's event. ... Three cautions slowed the action on a rugged racing surface: Hogge's spin (lap 15), sixth-finishing Andy Obertello's turn-two spin (lap 20) and Paul Guglielmoni's spin (lap 26). ... R.C. Whitwell won the modified feature. ... Last year's winner Clay Daly was scheduled to start on the pole of a heat but had engine problems in hot laps. ... Daly scratched from the feature along with Devin Crockett, Rob Sanders and scheduled polesitter Rob Mayea. ... Shane Stewart won the World of Outlaws Sprint Car feature.
On the move: R.C. Whitwell came from 14th to finish second.
Winner's sponsors: Shaw's Rocket Chassis is sponsored by Shaw Trucking Blaine Brothers, Lube Tech Liquid Technology and Allstate Peterbilt.
Car count: 18
Polesitter: Rob Mayea
Heat race winners: Don Shaw, Bobby Hogge IV
Next series race: March 7, Bakersfield Speedway (Bakersfield, CA) $2,000
Editor's note: Fixes Shaw's chassis to Rocket sted Bloomquist.
