Bo Slay (left) is interviewed by series announcer Dewayne Keith following his $5,000 victory.
What won the race: Bo Slay of Milton, Fla., led all 40 laps to win Saturday's eighth annual Bash at the Beach at Southern Raceway. Slay secured a $5,000 payday and his second career Coltman Farms Racing Southern All Star Series feature victory — his first since Nov. 26, 2022, with both wins coming at his home track.
Quotable: “Man, this is awesome. I don’t know if there’s been a better (win),” an emotional Slay said. “We’ve struggled and this team right here, they got heart, every one of them. They stood behind me when they probably shouldn’t have. I’ve let them down, but they kept on digging. That was a hell of a race, hell of a Southern Raceway, the track crew did a great job. This (win) does shut a bunch of people up. We’ve heard it in the back of our ears, 'Oh, he can’t do it, he can’t do it.' Well, get you some of this.”
Key notes: Second-starting Colton Leyendecker trailed Slay for the entire distance, finishing 0.586 of a second back. ... Billy Franklin grabbed third on a lap-16 restart and completed the podium for the second straight night at Southern. ... Hometown driver Joseph Joiner, winner of Friday's $3,000 opener, settled for fourth. ... Series points leader David McCoy started and finished fifth. ... Ryan Wilson rebounded from Friday's mechanical woes and placed eighth. ... Tyler Clem started and finished 10th aboard the Viper Motorsports Race Car prepared by Augie Burttram's Big Frog Motorsports team. ... The race's lone caution flew on lap 15 when 13th-running Steven Jernigan slowed; he completed four more laps before pulling off. ... Saturday's feature lasted 13 minutes with 11 drivers running at the finish.
On the move: Dalton Cook of Columbus, Ga., started 13th and finished seventh.
Winner's sponsors: Slay’s Pioneer Motorsports Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Jay Dickens Racing Engine and carries sponsorship from Slay’s Mobile Home Service, Three Trade Consultants, Randy Polk Homes, Jason McCullers Properties, Bilstein Shocks and SNS Wraps.
Points chase: After Southern: 1. David McCoy (374); 2. Dalton Cook (356); 3. Billy Franklin (352); 4. Kendall Franklin (328); 5. Ryan Wilson (322).
