Tyler Emory captured the Appalachian Mountain Speedweek opener.
What won the race: Reigning miniseries champion Tyler Emory of King George, Va., powered around race-long leader Drake Troutman exiting the final corner to win Friday's Appalachian Mountain Speedweek opener at Clinton County Speedway in Mill Hall, Pa. Troutman had led 32 of 35 laps until Emory's thrilling move, which earned him $5,000, in the 0.405-second margin to the checkers.
Quotable: "I started catching (Dylan) Yoder and (Drake) Troutman there, and I was like, 'All right, I don't think we're as bad as I thought we were,' " Emory said. "And then when Yoder had a flat right-rear or something, he came across my nose (slowing up) and that was close. ... Patience pays off sometimes. I didn't want to go too early. I guess it paid off."
Key notes: Emory earned his third career miniseries victory, tying him for sixth all-time with Austin Hubbard. ... Dylan Yoder of Middleburg, Pa., cut down a left-rear tire on lap 24 amid a fierce, slider-swapping battle for the lead with Troutman. Yoder led laps 22 and 23, giving Troutman all he could handle around the third-mile until slight contact from Troutman through turns one and two with 12 laps left slowed him out of the lead battle. ... Last year's Clinton County winner Jason Covert retired from the race on lap 10 and finished 24th. ... Emory also set a new track record with a lap of 13.461 seconds in qualifying. ... Troutman was quickest in Group B with Gregg Satterlee, Matt Cosner, Dylan Yoder and Dillan Stake advancing to the dash, guaranteeing top-six feature starting spots. ... The eight-race miniseries visits eight tracks across the Mid-Atlantic, with each event awarding a minimum $5,000 winner’s prize. … ... Teams are encouraged to paint the sidewalls of the right side tires with a color strip, to identify the tire compound being utilized (green = Hoosier NLMT 2 or American Racer SD44, red = NLMT 2.25 or AR SD48, yellow = NLMT 3 or AR PRO2, blue = NLMT 4 or AR PRO3, MD53 or MD56). Of participating teams, the top 10 finishers will be awarded a $40 cash bonus and enter into a drawing to win one free racing tire. Painting an incorrect/misleading color (based on tire compound) will result in disqualification.
On the move: Andrew Yoder of Middleburg, Pa., started 14th and finished fifth.
