Hudson O'Neal drives his Rumley Enterprises entry to victory.
What won the race: Executing a perfect turn-four crossover move to regain control from early leader Daulton Wilson, fourth-starting Hudson O'Neal led the final eight laps to win Sunday's $15,000 inaugural Sidney Langston Memorial at Ultimate Motorsports Park. O'Neal notched his first career win at the Elkin, N.C., 4/10-mile and his second aboard a Kevin Rumley-owned Longhorn after earning June 1's $5,000 Iron-Man Series win at Ohio's Atomic Speedway.
Quotable: “What a racetrack. We raced all over this thing. Me and Daulton (Wilson) raced as hard as two people could race and it’s awesome to be able to do that and both of our cars come out unscathed,” O’Neal said. “It’s awesome to be able to put on a show for all of these fans, but most importantly, we’re here for Matt Langston and his family.”
Key notes: The pole-starting Wilson, of Fayetteville, N.C., led the opening 24 laps before initially giving way to O'Neal, then fighting back to lead lap 32 before O'Neal's crossover move sealed the outcome. ... Fifth-starting Ross Bailes momentarily took the runner-up spot on lap 34 before Wilson prevailed and finished 0.659 of a second behind O'Neal. ... Bailes settled for third. ... Jordan Koehler battled Jonathan Davenport in the closing laps, with Davenport prevailing to finish fourth and Koehler completing the top five. ... Garrett Alberson gained seven spots and placed ninth. ... Brandon Sheppard slowed from fourth to draw the race's lone caution lap 17. His rear spoiler bent and separated from the deck following an opening lap wall scrape. ... Fifth-running Carson Ferguson slowed and pulled into the infield on lap 27. ... Sunday's inaugural Sidney Langston Memorial honored Sidney, of Trinity, N.C., the 18-year-old daughter of Matthew and Jenifer Langston who died on Aug. 29, 2022, in a non-racing automobile accident. ... The 40-lapper lasted 13 minutes with 10 drivers completing the distance.
On the move: Ben Watkins of Rock Hill, S.C., started 15th and finished seventh.
