Joseph Joiner celebrates his victory on the Panhandle tour.
What won the race: Outside front-row starter and hometown driver Joseph Joiner survived a lap-19 tangle and raced to victory in the opener of the Panhandle Challenge Series. Bo Slay crossed the finish line second, but was disqualified for weighing in too light, handing the runner-up spot to Frank Wilson.
Quotable: “I was so excited because we're planning to chase the NeSmith Weekly Racing Series points around here, and to start off with a win was a pretty good start. Our car wasn't too good early in the night, but it got to running better for us. I guess emotions took over because we were able to start the points season with a victory."
Key notes: Joiner and polesitter Cody Smith of Holt, Fla., tangled on the backstretch and into turn four battling for the lead on lap 19; Smith was disqualified when he pursued Joiner on foot. ... Joiner was a four-time winner last year on the Southeastern Crate Series, a precursor to the Panhandle tour.
On the move: Frank Wilson of Milton, Fla., started sixth and finished second.
