Bobby Pierce celebrates his $15,000 victory at Proctor Speedway.
What won the race: Three laps after slipping back to third, polesitter Bobby Pierce of Oakwood, Ill., worked under race-long leader Devin Moran on the 22nd lap and led the rest of Monday's caution-free 40-lap XR Super Series event debut at Proctor Speedway. Moran didn't give up without a fight, nearly regaining the lead before Pierce set sail over the last 15 laps to take the checkers 1.099 seconds ahead of Moran, the XRSS points leader. Pierce, forced out of features by engine woes the previous two nights, earned $15,000 for his fourth career series victory.
Quotable: "It feels awesome ... to have the last two days we had, that's the worst thing you can have in racing is to break a big powerplant. It gets expensive (and) we got some races to win back to make up for that stuff," Pierce said in victory lane, thanking crew and supporters. Pierce added: "I kinda felt my tires come in there after like five laps and I figured it would kind of take some lapped traffic and stuff to make the pass on (Moran)."
Key notes: Pierce rebounded from two straight nights of engine problems on the World of Outlaws Case Late Model Series. ... Last year's WoO champ, Pierce is also the reigning XRSS champion but hasn't focused on the XR circuit this season. ... Runner-up Devin Moran started outside the front row and led the first 21 laps. ... Moran has finished second in his last four feature starts. ... Mike Marlar grabbed second from Pierce on the ninth lap but slipped back to run third the rest of the way. ... Marlar plans on running the three straight XRSS events before heading back to Ohio to resume his run on the Lucas Oil Series. ... A dozen cars completed 40 laps at Proctor and 19 of 26 starters were running at the finish of the 11-minute race. ... Proctor Speedway was known in recent seasons as Halvor Lines Speedway and primarily runs WISSOTA-sanctioned Limited Late Models.
On the move: Ryan Gustin of Marshalltown, Iowa, started seventh and finished fourth.
Winner's sponsors: Pierce’s Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Vic Hill Racing Engine and carries sponsorship from Low Voltage Solutions, Rio Grande Waste Services, Inc., Hoker Trucking, Mesilla Valley Transportation, Oakwood Tire Center, Bloomington Normal Truck Performance, Carnaghi Towing & Repair, Toyota of Danville, Floyd’s Waste Systems, A Plus Vacuum, Leka Tree Service, Velocita, Bert Transmissions by Budda, Ted Brown’s Quality Paint & Body Shop, VP Race Fuels, Swift Springs, Bilstein Shocks and Performance Bodies.
