Garrett Alberson (58) heads for his Davenport sweep.
What won the race: Working under race-long leader Tyler Bruening on the 23rd lap, Garrett Alberson of Las Cruces, N.M., led the rest of Saturday's 40-lap Corn State Nationals to complete a Davenport Speedway weekend sweep on the Lucas Oil Midwest LateModel Racing Association. Alberson took the checkers 2.024 seconds ahead of Brandon Sheppard while Bruening settled for third after leading the first 22 laps.
Quotable: “I think I just fell into the right places at the right time,” Alberson said. “I knew the lane was probably going to change somewhere in there and I was trying to be smart with my tires. They did a great job with the track prep — it was transitioning and moving and dirt was flying. It was just awesome.”
Key notes: Alberson notched his eighth overall victory of 2024 and second on the MLRA circuit (he has four career MLRA victories). ... McKay Wenger finished fifth in his first MLRA start of the season. ... Outside front-row starter Dennis Erb Jr. slipped over the banking on the 16th lap, dropping him back to 12th. ... Two cautions slowed the action. ... On the 13th lap, Dillon McCowan slowed with right-rear suspension problems. During the caution, MLRA points leader Chad Simpson steered to the pits and drove nose-first toward the driver's side door of McCowan's car, apparently unhappy with an on-track incident. ... Chad Mahder slowed with a flat right-rear on the ninth lap. ... In Friday's opening Davenport feature, Alberson used a late-race pass to sneak past Dennis Erb Jr.
On the move: Tyler Erb of New Waverly, Texas, started eighth and finished fourth.
