David Breazeale became the tour's first winner from Mississippi.
What won the race: Overcoming a rash of early restarts before one in the late going, David Breazeale of Four Corners, Miss., sped to his first career DIRTcar Summer Nationals victory Saturday at Clarksville Speedway. Breazeale led all 40 laps to secure the $10,000 payday 1.207 seconds ahead of Jadon Frame in his debut at Clarksville.
Quotable: “I was just watching my spotter up there, Cody Mallory, he was telling me what I need to do and I was just telling myself not to screw up,” Breazeale said. “Once we started hitting lapped traffic I had to keep backing my pace down, I just figured someone might roll (around the outside of) me, but I never heard anybody. We had that late caution, I knew if I hit my marks we’d be OK.”
Key notes: Third-starting Frame, of Winchester, Tenn., battled Dillon McCowan for much of the second half, prevailing to finish second. Third-finishing McCowan remains the only driver to start all 18 Summer Nationals rounds, thus far. ... Christian Hanger overcame apparent engine woes under a lap-five caution and rebounded to finish fourth. ... Oakley Johns grabbed fifth from Carson Brown on the final lap, allowing Clay Stuckey to slip by for sixth. ... Provisional starter Mark Voigt gained 11 spots and placed eighth. ... The 40-lap feature was slowed by seven cautions, including two lengthy stoppages, the first being a 10-minute red flag for cleanup when Ethan Dotson spun from fourth, collecting Tanner English and Josh Putnam, among others. Dotson was unable to continue, while English slowed to bring out the fourth yellow a few laps later and Putnam pulled off on lap 10. ... The sixth caution was another 10-minute stoppage after Joe Chalmers and David Seibers tangled at turn-four exit. It took track officials several minutes to separate the two vehicles and for racing to resume. Both drivers continued, with Seibers finishing 11th, the last to complete the entire distance. ... The seventh and final yellow came again for Chalmers when he slowed on lap 35. He returned and was credited with 14th, one lap down. ... The race lasted 42 minutes, with 15 competitors running at the finish.
On the move: Clay Stuckey of Shreveport, La., started 18th and finished sixth.
Winner's sponsors: Breazeale’s Rocket Chassis by Coondog is powered by a Jay Dickens Racing Engine and carries sponsorship from David Breazeale Logging, James Johnson Logging, Bo’s Satellite Service, Coondog Academy, Thicket Legacy Apparel, JM Performance, Breazy’s Place, Hoosier Tire by Brian, DavidBreazeale.com and Slicker Graphics.
