David Breazeale celebrates his fourth career Southern All Star Series victory.
What won the race: Reclaiming the lead for good with an outside move around Dylan Knowles on a lap-nine restart, pole-starting David Brezeale of Four Corners, Miss., led the rest of Friday's 40-lap Larry Edge Memorial at Penton Raceway. Breazeale bagged $5,000 for his fourth career Coltman Farms Southern All Star Series victory and his first since June 12, 2020, at Deep South Speedway in Loxley, Ala.
Quotable: “It feels great, I mean .. anybody knows we hadn’t won a race in almost five years. The win last weekend at a track I never saw, come here to a track I never saw,” Breazeale said. “Now I had to work for it tonight, (Dylan Knowles) made me work for it, he showed me I had to get up on the wheel just a little bit more.”
Key notes: Breazeale referred to breaking a four-year winless streak seven days earlier when he grabbed a $10,000 DIRTcar Summer Nationals triumph at Clarksville (Tenn.) Speedway — it was his first win of any kind since his 2020 SAS victory at Deep South. ... Third-starting Knowles, of Lanett, Ala., pressured Breazeale throughout and grabbed the lead with an outside move out of turn two on a lap-seven restart. Knowles led once for two laps (7-8) before giving way to Breazeale on a lap-nine restart, finishing 0.508 of a second back. ... Series points leader Dalton Cook spun to draw cautions on lap four (from seventh) and lap 15 (from ninth), ending his night and relegating him to 18th. ... Cook's closest points challenger David McCoy narrowly missed the top five by 0.292 of a second behind Cruz Skinner. ... Billy Franklin spun with Cook on lap 15, but continued to place 12th. ... Billy's son, Austin Franklin overcame his involvement in multiple cautions to finish 13th, the final driver to complete 40 laps. ... The race was slowed by nine separate incidents, the largest coming on lap nine and ending the nights for Galen Robinson, Chase Oliver and Matthew Taylor. It took track safety crews nearly 10 minutes to cleanup the multicar melee. ... The feature lasted 49 minutes, with 16 running at the finish. ... Dan Cox scratched. ... Penton hosted the series for the first time since Mike Head's 2000 victory.
On the move: Chris Jones of Alabaster, Ala., started 18th and finished 10th.
