What won the race: Inheriting control on a lap-44 restart just after passing race-long leader Nick Anvelink before he tangled with a lapped car and spun, seventh-starting A.J. Diemel of Elk Mound, Wis., led the final seven laps to win Friday's seventh annual Duane Mahder Memorial at Red Cedar Speedway. Diemel's $5,555 WISSOTA Late Model victory is his first overall win of the season and his first Mahder Memorial triumph.
Key notes: Anvelink, of Bonduel, Wis., led the opening 43 laps from the pole before tangling with Aaron Wilson while trying to lap him and spinning at turn-three entrance, causing the race's fourth and final stoppage. Anvelink opted not to continue and was credited with 15th. ... Ninth-starting Ashley Anderson trailed Diemel the final seven laps, finishing 1.328 seconds back. ... Mike Prochnow completed the podium finishers after grabbing third from Jim Carlson on lap 45. Carlson settled for fourth. ... The event honored Duane Mahder, longtime racer and Red Cedar Speedway legend who died in a work-related accident in Nov. 2016, at the age of 64. ... Duane's son, Chad Mahder, improved 17 positions after failing to finish his heat and starting at the back. ... Jesse Glenz pressured Anvelink for the opening two laps until they made contact, sending Glenz spinning down the frontstretch. Sammy Mars did a masterful job of avoiding, while fourth-running Mark Hessler hit Glenz's left-rear, resulting in heavy left-side damage. Hessler was unable to continue, while Glenz retired 20 laps later. ... John Kaanta slowed from seventh to draw the race's third caution on lap 23. He was credited with 21st. ... The feature was reduced to 50 laps (from 55) following concerns from drivers about being able to make the entire distance on fuel. ... The main event lasted 27 minutes, with 13 drivers running at the checkers.
