Ricky Weiss celebrates at Magnolia Motor Speedway.
What won the race: Regaining control from early contender Mark Whitener, pole-starting Ricky Weiss of Headingley, Manitoba, cruised to win Saturday's 75-lap Governor's Cup at Magnolia Motor Speedway. Weiss led twice for 70 laps (1-15, 21-75) to bank his third straight $10,000 victory on the Rogers-Dabbs Crate Racin' USA Series and his seventh overall triumph of the season.
Quotable: “It was pretty cool to have a (Thursday night) test session and kinda shake it down and try some stuff,” Weiss said. “I called Cory (Hedgecock) from Eagle Engines, he gave me a little bit of advice on gear and tires. That last caution, I really didn’t want to see with about 6 or 7 (laps) to go there. I could hear him on the raceceiver and (Mark) Whitener picked the outside, so I knew if I could get through (turns) one and two real good, I thought we’d be okay.”
Key notes: Weiss has earned more than $30,000 since June 21 at Tazewell (Tenn.) Speedway. ... Seventh-starting Whitener, of Middleburg, Fla., charged to lead once for five laps (16-20) before giving way to Weiss and taking advantage of Spencer Hughes's last-lap spin to finish third. ... Fourth-starting Hughes, of Meridian, Miss., dropped to 12th on the final lap after looping Chris McElhenney's No. 27 machine in turn two. ... Corey Neil Jr. recaptured the runner-up spot on lap 73 and trailed Weiss the final three circuits, finishing 2.515 seconds back. ... Seventh-place finisher Mario Gresham later won the $1,500 602 Sportsman feature. ... Josh Ray advanced 14 positions and completed the top-10 finishers. ... Series points leader Jimmy Thomas slowed from sixth to draw the race's fourth and final caution on lap 68. He continued to 11th, the final driver to complete 50 laps. ... Jake Rainey spun from 13th on lap 30, triggering the second stoppage. ... Tenth-running Will Roland slowed to bring out the first yellow flag on lap 16. ... The Governor's Cup feature lasted 35 mintues, with 17 drivers running at the checkers.
On the move: Matt Dooley of Fayetteville, Ga., started 21st and finished sixth.
