Tyler Erb celebrates his 10th Summer Nationals victory of the season.
What won the race: Executing a perfect turn-two slider to take command from race-long pacesetter Dona Marcoullier on lap 36, seventh-starting Tyler Erb of New Waverly, Texas, the remainder of Friday's 40-lap DIRTcar Summer Nationals debut at Crystal Motor Speedway. Erb earned $10,000 for his 14th career series victory, 10 of them coming this season.
Quotable: “It was fun tonight, it really was. In the heats, it was bad starting where I was starting and Dona (Marcoullier) had three shots at it, ya know he did get us and won the heat,” Erb said. “They made us earn it tonight and there was no shame in anything that happened tonight with this race track. I’ve heard nothing but ‘it rubbers and this and that’ but that was the furthest thing from rubber that I’ve seen in a long time.”
Key notes: Erb increased his overall race winnings to more than $75,000 this season on the Hell Tour. ... Pole-starting Marcoullier, of Houghton Lake, Mich., led the opening 35 laps before hopping the turn-two cushion at the exact moment Erb made his winning move, fading to take the checkers 1.903 seconds back. ... Dillon McCowan advanced four positions and placed fourth; he remains the only driver to start all 21 Summer Nationals features thus far. ... Derrick Hillier, winner of a $4,000 unsanctioned race there last fall, slipped from third to finish sixth. ... Thomas Hunziker gained 14 spots and rounded out the top 10 finishers, the last driver running at the finish. ... Fifth-running Rusty Schlenk pulled off on lap 28; he was credited with 12th. ... Sixth-starting Logan Nickerson worked his way to second by lap 10 before appearing to lose a right-rear tire and quickly leaving the racing surface on lap 22. Nickerson pulled straight into the pits and never returned. ... Wil Herrington broke a driveshaft while running seventh and drew the race's third caution at the same time as Nickerson's flat; he was credited with 15th. ... The largest incident was a seven-minute red flag for a six-car pileup on lap 10, a stackup that ended the nights for Clay Stuckey, Eric Spangler and Travis Stemler. Ryan VanderVeen, Garrett Wiles and David Hilliker were also involved and all three continued until retiring under the lap-22 caution. ... The 40-lapper was slowed by four separate incidents and lasted 20 minutes. The race went green at 12:15 a.m. local time. ... Joe Pomeroy scratched from the feature lineup.
On the move: Chad Finley of St. Johns, Mich., started 15th and finished fifth.
Winner's sponsors: Erb’s winning Best Performance Motorsports Rocket Chassis is powered by a Clements Racing Engine and carries sponsorship from Langenfelder Mechanical Contractors, Bulk Material Lift, First Class Septic, Roberts Bee Company, Anthony’s Pizza, JRR Trucking, Base Racing Fuel, Base Oil, Sani-Weld, Inc., Keyser Manufacturing, Integra Racing Shocks, Go Lithium Batteries, Midwest Sheet Metal, Terbo Threads and KBC Graphix.

Heat race recap

Second-starting Dona Marcoullier launched on the third restart attempt and led all eight laps to win the first heat race by 0.771 of a second over pole-starting Tyler Erb. The first caution came when the opening start was called back for an uneven launch. The second stoppage came on the ensuing restart attempt when Marcoullier nearly left the racing surface, causing a stackup that saw Mark Voigt tangle with Jake Rendel, and Thomas Hunziker nearly sending Rendel upside down. The incident necessitated a five-minute red flag to check on Rendel and remove his car from the turn-two berm. All three drivers were unable to continue. … Pole-starting Ashton Winger survived multiple late-race restarts to lead all nine laps and win heat two by 1.313 seconds over Rylee Knoll, who reclaimed the runner-up spot from Jackson Hise on the final lap. The race’s first yellow flag came on the final lap when third-running Jacob Stuhr left the racing surface in turn three. The second stoppage came on the ensuing restart when Garrett Wiles tangled with Hise while battling for second, spinning after turn-four contact. … Third-starting Derrick Hillier inherited control on the lap-two restart and led the final seven laps to win heat three by 1.878 seconds over fifth-starting Clay Stuckey. The first caution came on the second lap when Carter Schlenk slowed with a flat tire before pulling off. Early leader Mike Vandermark pulled off under the lap-two caution and was also unable to continue. The second stoppage came on lap five when Ryder Price slammed into the back of Ronnie Smith as he slowed abruptly from sixth. Both retired. … Second-starting Rusty Schlenk overcame several early-race restarts to lead all eight laps and won heat four by 1.493 seconds over pole-starting Dillon McCowan. … Pole-starting Curtis Roberts led flag-to-flag to win heat five by 0.350 of a second over Wil Herrington. … Pole-starting Logan Nickerson held off David Hilliker to win the sixth and final heat race by 1.242 seconds. The race’s lone caution came on the final lap when Brad Harden spun from seventh as he came to take the white flag. He continued and placed sixth.
