Shane Sabraski's $11,111 payday is the largest of his brief Late Model career.
What won the race: Winning a three-wide battle over the final laps, Late Model rookie Shane Sabraski of Rice, Minn., led all 41 circuits of the Tom Waseleski Memorial at Hibbing Race for a career-high $11,111 payday. Sabraski, winner of more than 900 WISSOTA events among multiple divisions, fought off 13th-starting Darrell Nelson and ninth-starting Tyler Peterson over the final three laps.
Quotable: My car seemed really good early on but at the end, it seemed like it was getting a little skaty and stuff on me and I could hear Tyler (Peterson) all over me, so I was pretty much trying to make it pretty wide ... it's for 11-grand," Sabraski said "So, yeah, we got it done, and super, super pumped about this one. An awesome race."
Key notes: Sabraski wasn't challenged most of the race, but had his hands full in the final laps with Tyler Peterson and Darrell Nelson. ... Eight cautions slowed the action, the last one on lap 38 when Derek Vesel spun into turn one. ... Jeff Massingill spun in turns three and four on lap 35. ... Kevin Eder drew a lap-34 yellow. ... A lap-33 caution flew for debris (a broken driveshaft off an undetermined car). ... Tommy Waseleski Jr., competing after being out of action for a half-dozen years, and Keith Niemi tangled on a midway restart. ... Seventh-running Jeff Provinzino slowed in turn four on the 21st lap. ... Waseleski spun on the fourth lap. ... The first start was scrapped when Waseleski, Ben Heinle and others got caught up in a turn-two scramble. ... Former track champ Kyle Peterlin was the first retiree. ... The inaugural race honored a multitime track champion in the Northland and the 2001 winner of the Silver 1000, who died unexpectedly at 62 last September. ... Skeeter Estey of Kelly Lake, Minn., won Thursday’s $3,000 Prelude to the Waseleski Memorial at Grand Rapids (Minn.) Speedway.
On the move: Reigning WISSOTA champ Tyler Peterson of Hickson, N.D., started ninth and finished second; Darrell Nelson of Hermantown, Minn., started 13th and finished third; Pat Doar of New Richmond, Wis., started 21st and finished seventh.
Winner's sponsors: Sabraski's Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Vic Hill Racing Engine and sponsored by West Metro Buick-GMC, QA1 Racing Shocks, Speedwerx Custom Exhaust and Joe Signs.
