Josh Skorczewski grabbed his first NLRA victory.
What won the race: Inheriting control for the final time on a lap-18 restart after mid-race leader Dustin Strand tangled with a lapped car, pole-starting Josh Skorczewski of Aberdeen, S.D., benefited from a late-race caution and held on to win Friday's 30-lap Dacotah Bank Rumble opener at Brown County Speedway. Skorczewski led three times for 20 laps (1, 6-11, 18-30) to capture the $2,566 victory, his first on the Northern LateModel Racing Association.
Quotable: “I really didn’t know where to be on the race track and then somethings going wrong with one of my shocks and I can’t figure out which one it is,” Skorczewski said. “We’re wheeling up like crazy, so it’s kinda hard to drive this thing right now. If the leaders keep getting wrecked (tomorrow night) that’ll help, I mean I got pretty damn lucky tonight, ya know.”
Key notes: It's Skorczewski's second straight win at Brown County (July 12) and three in-a-row overall including July 13 at Miller (S.D.) Central Speedway. It's his second touring series win of the season after topping June 6's $3,000 Tri-State event at Dakota State Fair Speedway in Huron, S.D. ... Seventh-starting Mike Greseth nearly stole the lead away from Skorczewski on the final lap before Thomas Weisgram left the turn-two racing surface to draw the race's fifth and final caution on lap 28. Greseth fought off a challenge from 13th-starting Denver Nickeson on the two-lap shootout and finished second, 0.766 of a second back. Nickeson took third, 0.142 of a second behind Greseth. ... From winning a consolation Brody Troftgruben improved 13 positions and placed fourth. ... Defending Rumble opener winner Chase Gelling gained 10 spots and finished fifth. ... Dustin Strand led laps 12-17 before tangling with Mitch Johnson while trying to lap him, sending him spinning on lap 18. Both drivers were unable to continue. ... Matt Gilbertson led laps 2-5 before tangling with the lapped vehicle driven by Greg Friestad who slowed suddenly out of turn two and attempted to pull off. Gilbertson retired after slamming into the back of Friestad's machine. ... Chad Becker did a half-spin from third on lap three that did not draw a caution; he continued for two more laps before pulling off. ... The race's initial stoppage came on the opening lap and necessitated a 10-minute red flag for cleanup after Mitch Johnson spun out of turn four, collecting several cars. Dustin Arthur ended up backwards with Kent Arment's machine perched on the nose, while Shane Edginton, Ryan Corbett, Ben Mickelson and David Carlson also suffered race-ending damage. All drivers were unhurt. ... The 30-lapper lasted 33 minutes, with 10 drivers completing the distance.
On the move: Brandon Corbett of Grand Forks, N.D., started 22nd and finished sixth; Ryan Dahl of West Fargo, N.D., started 25th and placed eighth.
Winner's sponsors: Skorczewski’s Rocket Chassis carries sponsorship from House of Glass, Corbett Trucking, Moccasin Creek Casino, Engine Shop, Pizza Ranch, Zabel Bros., Gary’s Auto, Fox Racing Shox and Extreme Graphix.
