Bobby Pierce celebrates his second flag-to-flag victory in as many nights at Huset's Speedway.
What won the race: Surviving a slip over the turn-four cushion with seven circuits remaining that nearly cost him the lead, Bobby Pierce of Oakwood, Ill., turned back Devin Moran’s challenge to complete a flag-to-flag victory in Friday night’s 40-lap Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series feature at Huset’s Speedway. The $10,000 triumph gave Pierce a sweep of the third-mile oval’s two Silver Dollar Nationals preliminary programs and pushed his overall win streak to six in a row.
Quotable: “It woke me up, that’s for sure,” Pierce said of his lap-33 bobble. “It was getting pretty choppy on entrance of (turn) three and I think I just bottomed out, and when it started I couldn’t get it back and I was stuck up there for a second. I didn’t think I was ever gonna get out. I finally realized at the end it was Devin (in second) and I didn’t know what he had on for tires, but whatever he did he was gaining on us for sure and he was the best car at the end so we got pretty lucky.”
Key notes: Pierce lost more than a second of his advantage over Moran when he stumbled on lap 33 and saw Moran look to his inside off turn four heading to the white flag, but the red-hot World of Outlaws regular beat Moran to the finish line by 0.615 of a second. … Pierce registered his second Lucas Oil Series victory of 2024 and the 17th of his career while securing the pole position for Saturday’s 80-lap Silver Dollar Nationals finale. … Moran overtook Daulton Wilson for second on lap 28 en route to his runner-up finish. … Wilson had wrestled second from Tim McCreadie on lap 20, but after losing the spot to Moran he went on to relinquish third to McCreadie on the final lap to leave him with a fourth-place finish. … The first of the race’s five caution flags flew on lap eight when 11th-running Jimmy Owens slapped the turn-one wall and was clipped by Drake Troutman, whose night came to an end on the ensuing restart after his car blew heavy smoke and flamed up momentarily as he rolled to a stop in turn four. A yellow flag was followed by a red for safety workers to tend to Troutman’s machine, which apparently had an oil line knocked loose when he hit Owens’s car. … A caution was needed on lap nine for a multicar accident involving Scott Ward, Curt Schroeder, Cory Lawler and Mike Marlar, who started last after switching to a backup car. … Schroeder continued but spun in turn four on lap 15 for another caution. … Ross Robinson triggered the final yellow when he slowed on lap 17. … The top-16 point earners from the two preliminary nights are locked into Saturday’s $53,000-to-win Silver Dollar Nationals finale.
On the move: After pulling out of his heat with trouble, Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga., started 23rd and finished 14th.
