Bobby Pierce led the final seven laps for a $15,000 victory.
What won the race: Fifth-starting Bobby Pierce of Oakwood, Ill., overtook race-long leader Hudson O'Neal on a lap-34 restart and led the rest of Sunday's 40-lap XR Super Series debut at Clay County Fair Speedway. Earning $15,000 for his third XRSS victory of the season, Pierce kept up a July hot stretch with his eighth feature victory in his last 10 starts overall.
Quotable: "I just tried to dip below (O'Neal) and hope he was gonna go in there for a slider line again," Pierce said. "I don't know, it just stuck really good on the bottom, got under him, got a good exit off (turn) two. And from then on, it was just nail the slider and turn four and try to stay ahead."
Key notes: Pierce's sixth career XRSS victory ties him with Chris Madden for the all-time series lead. ... Polesitter Mike Marlar got too high exiting turns two and four, slipping back to third on the first lap; he ended up sixth. ... Two cautions slowed the action, including for Daulton Wilson's lap-34 flat tire; Wilson held the second spot most of the race but settled for ninth. .... The first caution flew on lap 32. ... Corey Bosma was 12th in his first series start. ... Tyler Myers wrecked in time trials and scratched for the night. ... Luke Sathoff (retired with a smoking car in heat action) and Shane DeMey scratched after time trials. ... Besides 18 Late Models, the event drew seven modifieds and 10 stock cars. ... The event was scheduled for July 9 before the area was hit with devastating flooding, forcing a postponement. In a nod of relief for the community, series promoter Barry Braun offered free admission to anyone with a Spencer, Iowa address.
On the move: Ricky Thornton Jr. of Chandler, Ariz., started seventh and finished fourth.
