Jayden Schmidt celebrates his first Dirt Kings victory.
What won the race: Sixth-starting Jayden Schmidt of Seymour, Wis., overtook Taylor Scheffler and paced the final 15 circuits to win Saturday's $4,600 Diamond 46 at 141 Speedway, securing his first career Wabam Dirt Kings Tour victory. Schmidt secured his first touring series victory and his second career Late Model triumph
Key notes: Schmidt's first career Late Model victory came July 12 at Outagamie Speedway in Seymour, Wis. ... Third-starting Taylor Scheffler of Waukesha, Wis., led laps 30-31 before giving way to Schmidt and finishing 0.769 of a second back. Scheffler was going for back-to-back tour victories after collecting $2,000 on July 27 at Shawano (Wis.) Speedway. ... Six-time and reigning series champ Nick Anvelink withdrew from the USA Nationals at Cedar Lake Speedway and finished third. ... Mike Mullen led the opening 29 laps before slipping to fourth. ... Brett Swedberg gained nine spots and rounded out the top five. ... The event honored the life and legacy of “Diamond” Jim Letizia for his 40 years in racing, many of which spent behind the wheel of the familiar No. D7 Dirt Late Model. Letizia also had a large presence as a local businessman, owning Diamond Jim’s Motorcars and Diamond Jim’s Steakhouse. Jim's son, Turk Letizia retired on lap 15 and was credited with 19th. ... The 46-lapper was slowed by two cautions and lasted 17 minutes, with 15 drivers completing the distance.
