Jon Mitchell captured his first Comp Cams victory in more than 10 years.
What won the race: Overcoming multiple midrace restarts, Jon Mitchell of Texarkana, Texas, held on for a green-to-checkered triumph in Saturday's 31st annual Spooky 50 at Super Bee Speedway to collect $5,000. Mitchell took the checkers 0.713 of a second ahead of Morgan Bagley for his sixth career Comp Cams Super Dirt Series victory and his first since Aug. 1, 2014, at Diamond Park Speedway in Nashville, Ark.
Quotable: “We’ve been on a dry spell for sure. I knew we had one coming here before long, we got a pretty good car here now,” Mitchell said. “This thing started getting one-lane there and I just tried not to mess up and take care of my right-rear tire. Man it feels good, I’m tellin’ ya it’s been a while, it makes you question yourself ... man, to hang that big check in the shop is bigger than the money, to tell you the truth.”
Key notes: The race was originally scheduled as $10,000-to-win, but when the track dropped its Friday race, it dropped the purse of the event to $5,000-to-win for financial reasons, series co-owner Chris Sullivan said. ... Mitchell's victory was first since topping a 604 Crate Late Model field on Aug. 6, 2022, at Super Bee. ... Mitchell's last major event triumph also came at Super Bee on July 18, 2020, a $5,000 Firecracker feature. ... Morgan Bagley trailed Mitchell all 40 laps and finished second, earning runner-up in the final season standings, just 11 markers behind Logan Martin. ... Clay Stuckey pressured Bagley in the early laps after each restart, but settled for third. ... Martin, of West Plains, Mo., finished sixth, clinching his third career Comp Cams Series title (2020-'21). ... B.J. Robinson, winner of Friday's $5,000 opener at 67 of Texarkana (Ark.) Speedway, was one of a few drivers trying to make the outside line work before fading to 11th. ... The 40-lapper was slowed by three cautions, the first coming on lap 20 when Charlie Cole slowed in turn four. Cole continued for another 10 laps before retiring. ... Scott Crigler slowed from sixth to cause the second stoppage on lap 22. He continued but could only recover to 14th. ... David Payne spun to draw the final yellow flag on lap 24 before calling it a night. ... The race lasted 20 minutes, with nine starters completing the distance.
On the move: Kyle Beard of Trumann, Ark., started 10th and finished fourth; Shane Stephens of Arlington, Tenn., started 15th and finished ninth.
