Corey Zeitner earned $3,000 for his Crawford County victory.
What won the race: Taking the lead on a lap-16 restart, fifth-starting Corey Zeitner of Bellevue, Neb., captured his first career Deery Brothers Summer Series victory Saturday in the season opener at Crawford County Speedway. Tyler Bruening was second while polesitter and early leader Andy Nezworski was third.
Quotable: “It was definitely one of my biggest wins. It was good to get a win running with these guys,” said Zeitner, who had just four career series starts to his credit coming into the night. “There were a lot of big names here and it was good to know we can run with them.”
Key notes: Reigning series champ Justin Kay pulled in with an overheating engine while leading on lap 26; he started sixth and took command on a restart. ... Jeff Aikey was among other retirees. ... Joe Zrostlik's fourth-place finish was the best of his career on the series. ... IMCA's Late Model tour made its first trip to Denison since July 28, 1994. ... Gary Webb of Blue Grass, Iowa, won that race, the second of a four-race winning streak en route to the first of three series championships.
On the move: John Emerson of Waterloo, Iowa, came from 19th to finish fifth.
Winner's sponsors: Zeitner & Son, Seeking Wagyu Calves, Alexander Lawns, Element 102, Brake Man, Keyser Manufacturing and CRZ Racing.
Points chase: The race opened the 2015 season for the IMCA Late Model tour, which is making a concerted effort to have more series events in central and western Iowa.
Car count: 25
Polesitter: Andy Nezworski
Heat race winners: Scott Fitzpatrick, Andy Nezworski, Corey Zeitner
