Wife Mary welcomes Chad Ogle to Volunteer's victory lane.
What won the race: Chad Ogle of Sevierville, Tenn., led all the way Saturday at Volunteer Speedway for his first victory on the Carolina Clash Super Late Model Series, earning $4,000. Riley Hickman of Ooltewah, Tenn., debuting a Club 29 Race Car, overtook outside front-row starter Vic Hill of Morrisville, Tenn., for second on a mid-race restart.
Quotable: “We switched car (chassis) brands for this year, getting us a Rocket Chassis. And if tonight’s any indication, we definitely made the right decision," said Ogle. "We haven’t won a race since back in 2013 when we won that Southern Regional Racing Series show here. That’s what it’s all about – winning races. With this new car we’ve got and how good it’s performing, I’m excited about racing and can’t wait until the next race.”
Key notes: The feature lineup was set straight from qualifying. ... Bobby Mays brought out the first caution with a lap-13 spin in the fourth corner. ... Chris Madden of Gray Court, S.C., pressured Ogle in the race's middle stages, but could never complete a pass. ... Mark Douglas drew a lap-28 yellow flag; Madden pulled off under the caution where his crew discovered issues under the hood. ... Donald McIntosh went for a loop one lap later to slow the race for a final time. ... Volunteer added an April 18 Carolina Clash race. ... The series ran its 285th event over 16 seasons. ... The Volunteer community is thinking of Bill Ledger, a 92-year-old man seriously injured in a March 30 accident. He was a former driver, car owner and worker at the Bulls Gap oval. ... Tim Byrd held off a hard-charging Josh Henry to win the Crate Late Model feature.
On the move: Hickman came from seventh for a runner-up finish. ... Ben Watkins of Rock Hill, S.C., improved from 18th to finish 11th.
Winner's sponsors: Ogle's Rocket Chassis has Custom Race Engine and is sponsored by Brooks Malone, Geo Services, Geotechnical & Materials Engineers, Hoosier Racing Tire, Matlock Decal Company and Ogle's Neighborhood Service & Towing.
Points chase: Chris Ferguson of Mt. Holly, N.C., led the points entering Saturday's event, which he did not enter.
