Kyle Lee captured his richest career victory.
What won the race: Kyle Lee of Mercersburg, Pa., won flag-to-flag in Friday's 21st annual Butch Renninger Memorial at Port Royal Speedway, collecting $7,333 in the 33-lapper for the richest payday of his career. Lee sped to the checkers by 1.198 seconds over sixth-starting Mason Zeigler to capture his third victory of the season and his first at Port Royal since a $3,000 payday Aug. 7, 2021.
Quotable: “We’ve been struggling here this year and the crew’s worked really, really hard. We figured some stuff out and got a little bit better and we were fortunate tonight to redraw the pole, that certainly helped,” Lee said. “I was struggling getting through lapped traffic, shows just how much air plays a factor, it totally changes the car. I looked up and I seen Zeigler was in second and just hoped all the lapped cars stayed straight and I could navigate through them enough to keep a little space between us and I guess I kept just enough room.”
Key notes: Lee won his first feature of the season; his previous victories came April 27 and June 28 at Bedford (Pa.) Speedway, where he was crowned track champion the previous weekend weekend. ... Mason Zeigler took second from Hayes Mattern on lap 16 and cut Lee's advantage as low as 0.759 of a second with 12 laps to go before fading back at the finish. ... Mattern settled for third. ... Second-starting Justin Weaver, a two-time winner this season at Port Royal, pursued Lee the opening nine laps before giving way to Mattern and eventually Zeigler, finishing fourth. ... Dillan Stake gained four spots and rounded out the top five. ... Lucas Oil Series regular Ross Robinson started 11th and finished seven. ... Entering Friday with a 25-point advantage Rick Eckert was running fifth when he slowed on lap nine to bring out the race's lone caution. Eckert was unable to continue and required a tow to the pits. ... Dylan Yoder's sixth-place effort clinched Port Royal's division title. ... Drake Troutman finished 13th in making his second start for the Viper-Big Frog Motorsports team. ... The event honors Howard D. “Butch” Renninger Jr. of Mifflintown, Pa., a 41-time feature winner and three-time track champion at Port Royal; Renninger died on May 1, 2004, at the age of 62. ... The race, postponed by rain the previous weekend, lasted 16 minutes, with 16 drivers completing 33 laps and 22 running at the finish.
On the move: Coleby Frye of Dover, Pa., started 15th and finished eighth.
Winner's sponsors: Lee’s Rocket Chassis carries sponsorship from D&D Auto Recycling, Palmer Realty, Elite Cleaning, Browning Fabrication & Polishing, All About Doors, Timmon’s Sunoco, Truzie The Voice of Free Speech, Sunoco Race Fuels and All About Wraps.
