Cole Searing celebrates his $9,200 John Seitz Memorial victory.
What won the race: Squeezing his way by mid-race leader Aaron Turnbull on lap 45, fifth-starting Cole Searing of Huron, S.D., led the rest of Saturday's 92-lap 18th annual John Seitz Memorial at River Cities Speedway. Searing overcame several late-race restarts and beat Dustin Strand to the line by 2.529 seconds to secure the $9,200 victory.
Quotable: “I’ve been saying for the last three years I’ve left this place with third-place finishes, that I was gonna win this son-of-a gun one of these days,” Searing said. “I didn’t get the privilege to know John (Seitz) at all, you guys have been having us up here and I always (say) it’s the best weekend of the year … when you lock in the first night, you have all day to think about what you should or shouldn’t do (to the car). At one point (Jimmy Mars) told me ‘I’m not gonna beg and plead with you to leave the car alone, but leave the car alone’ and I did.”
Key notes: Searing, who entered with three straight third-place event finishes, grabbed his eighth overall victory of the season, five of them coming on WISSOTA's Challenge Series. Searing trails Tyler Peterson by 11 points in WCS standings entering Wednesday's season finale at I-94 EMR Speedway in Fergus Falls, Minn. ... Fourth-starting Dustin Strand, a nine-time race winner and back-to-back River Cities track champ, reclaimed the runner-up spot on a lap-86 restart but never truly challenged Searing in the late going. ... Aaron Turnbull, a two-time Seitz Memorial winner (2019, '20), led 31 laps (14-44) before slipping to third in a car owned by Shane Edginton. ... Mike Greseth rebounded to fourth after slowing with a flat tire to draw the race's third caution on lap 33. Greseth was 19th after pitting to change the flat with 60 laps to go. ... A.J. Diemel, three-time Seitz Memorial winner (2014, '16, '21), worked his way as high as fourth on lap 62 before giving way to Greseth on the lap-86 restart and settling for fifth. ... Defending event winner Shane Edginton finished sixth aboard a No. 92 paying tribute to Seitz. ... Chad Becker led the opening 13 laps from the pole before fading to seventh. ... Scott Ward overcame a lap-85 spin to finish eighth. ... The event honored Seitz, the four-time NLRA Series champion who died of apparent natural causes while on a snowmobile trip in 2007, at the age of 36. ... The race was slowed by eight cautions and lasted 63 minutes, including a 15-minute fuel stop on lap 33, with 20 starters completing the distance.
On the move: Shane Edginton of East Saint Paul, Manitoba, started 20th and finished sixth.
