Payton Freeman led all 30 laps to earn his first career Hunt the Front victory.
What won the race: Turning back multiple challenges from Brandon Overton, polesitter Payton Freeman of Commerce, Ga., led all 30 laps Friday at Thunderhill Raceway Park for $5,000 and his first career Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series victory. Freeman took the checkers 0.645 of a second ahead of Tanner English while Overton settled for third after traffic hampered the frontrunners late.
Quotable: “I knew we had a good race car there, we just needed to try to get good takeoff there and try to get out front,” Freeman said. “We had lapped traffic there and I really didn’t want to get off that bottom (line) ya know and I tried the top there for a little while and Brandon (Overton) got me and luckily the caution come out. Sometimes (it's better (to be) lucky than good, we were able correct that and make good decisions.”
Key notes: Freeman notched his second victory of the season; he won Aug. 2 in Schaeffer's Southern Nationals competition at East Alabama Motor Speedway in Phenix City. ... At Thunderhill, Overton actually edged ahead in turn one on the second-to-last lap, but Freeman went back ahead when a slower car broke Overton's momentum exiting turn two, allowing Freeman to regain the lead and Tanner English to grab second. ... Overton also unofficially took the lead on the 16th lap, but a caution erased the moved. ... Shane Clanton ran second early but fell back on restarts. ... Three cautions slowed the action, the first when Payton Freeman jumped the start. ... A lap-12 caution appeared for a Jay Scott-Dillard Hatchett tangle in turn four. ... A lap-16 caution dropped when sixth-running Zack Mitchell slowed with a flat tire. ... Seth McCormack lost his seventh starting spot when he pitted just before the green, then retired after one lap. ... The third annual Mark Fields Memorial honors the former Lawrenceburg, Tenn., racer who died on Oct. 18, 2021, at 43 after being shot following a confrontation with a neighbor (a tribute No. F26 car paced the feature field). … Saturday’s finale pays $15,000-to-win.
On the move: Sam Seawright of Rainsville, Ala., started 11th and finished fourth.
