What won the race: Sliding by early leader Ricky Culpepper as he was mired in lapped traffic on lap 16, sixth-starting Randy Weaver of Crossville, Tenn., led the remainder of Sunday's 50-lap 52nd annual Alabama State Championship at East Alabama Motor Speedway. Weaver secured the $10,000 Rogers-Dabbs Crate Racin' USA payday for his first victory of any kind since July 25, 2021, a $4,053 triumph on the Schaeffer's Southern Nationals at Rome (Ga.) Speedway.
Quotable: “Hats off to (car owner) Chip (Vineyard) for letting me drive this thing. I usually do what you’re doing, ya know, I get to announce,” Weaver said. “I knew we needed (the track prep), but I knew it was gonna be wide open for a while and them guys are really good in that condition. Us old fat guys, we ain’t too good on that. The car was a little tight to start with, they told me it would be, we burned off some fuel and man, that thing come alive. And man, I believe anybody in the grandstands could drive it then.”
Key notes: Ricky Culpepper led the opening 15 laps from the pole before Weaver slipped by with a turn-three slider; Culpepper traded the runner-up spot with Austin Horton multiple times before reclaiming it for good on a lap-49 restart and taking the checkers 1.338 seconds behind Weaver. ... Horton settled for third. ... Montana Dudley, winner of last fall's $5,000 604 Crate portion of the National 100, improved seven positions and rounded out the top five. ... Mario Gresham started 23rd and finished ninth. ... Wil Herrington slowed from fourth to draw the race's first caution on lap three and did not continue. ... Steven Jernigan spun from 19th as Weaver was poised to take the white flag, causing the eighth and final stoppage. ... The race lasted 44 minutes, with 16 competitors completing 50 laps and and 19 running at the finish.
On the move: Matt Henderson of Loudon,Tenn., started 24th and finished fourth.
Winner's sponsors: Weaver's Chip Vineyard-owned CVR Race Cars entry is powered by a Hendren Racing Engine and carries sponsorship from Vineyard Landscapes, Stanco Equipment, Duplissey Racing, Pro Shocks and Fastlane Signs & Graphics.
