Devin Moran races over Bunnell Run to his first career Pennsboro victory.
What won the race: Pole-starting Devin Moran of Dresden, Ohio, fended off several challenges from Bobby Pierce to win the second 25-lap, $10,000 Mason-Dixon 100 prelim at Pennsboro Speedway, in the event rain-postponed from Friday. Moran beat Pierce to the line by 1.099 seconds for his third XR Super Series victory of the season and the third of his career. It's Moran's first Pennsboro triumph, a place where his father, Donnie Moran, won two Hillbilly 100 events (1988, ’89) and the 1988 Dirt Track World Championship.
Quotable: “We took from Thursday night on the restarts what we should’ve done and applied that into tonight and it just worked out,” Moran said. “Bobby (Pierce) was really good; he showed me his nose a couple times. I was struggling getting through them lapped cars, especially in (turns) one and two. I just couldn’t do quite what I needed to. The track was great, it was good racing, and now we got a whole other show to go ahead.”
Key notes: The co-sanctioned event also provided Moran his third career Jay's Automotive United Late Model Series victory and his first since sweeping the $20,000 Northern Series Racefest World Championship weekend Oct. 9-10, 2021, at West Virginia Motor Speedway in Mineral Wells, W.Va. ... Pierce powered around Nick Hoffman for second on a lap-nine restart and pursued Moran the rest of the way, cutting his advantage as low as 0.146 of a second on lap 21 before fading back at the checkers. ... Hoffman, of Mooresville, N.C., started and finished third for the second straight Pennsboro feature. ... Sixth-starting Freddie Carpenter also took advantage of restarting on the outside on the ninth lap, finishing fourth. ... ULMS points leader Michael Lake rounded out the top five. ... The race's lone stoppage came when Kyle Thomas slowed with right-front damage as the leaders began lap nine. Thomas pulled straight to his trailer and didn't return. ... Pennsboro's second 25-lap prelim lasted 12 minutes, with 11 starters completing the distance and 16 running at the finish.
On the move: Ken Schaltenbrand of Sarver, Pa., started 17th and finished ninth.
