Michael Chilton celebrates a $7,500 victory, his first of the 2024 season.
What won the race: Powering by early leader Jensen Ford on lap eight, second-starting Michael Chilton of Salvisa, Ky., overcame a late-race surge from Devin Gilpin and nipped him at the line by 0.065 of a second to win Saturday's $7,500 Fall Classic Jeff Gullett Tribute at Lake Cumberland Speedway. Chilton led the final 33 laps for his first win of the season and the third of his career with the Coltman Farms Southern All Star Series — his first since June 1, 2019, at Richmond (Ky.) Raceway.
Key notes: Jensen Ford led the opening seven laps from the pole before fading to ninth and pulling off on lap 29. ... Devin Gilpin grabbed the runner-up spot on lap nine and chased Chilton the rest of the way, nearly stealing the win at the line. ... Tanner English started and finished third. ... Camaron Marlar, already a two-time winner this season at Lake Cumberland, finished fourth. ... Jason Jameson improved three positions and rounded out the top five as the highest finishing of the three Justin Rattliff Racing drivers. ... The event honors Jeff Gullett, of Harrodsburg, Ky., the longtime crewman for JRR who died after an apparent heart attack in his sleep on Sept. 10 at the age of 61. ... Daulton Wilson, winner of Friday's $5,000 Big Daddy Classic at Ponderosa Speedway in Junction City, Ky., finished seventh. ... Justin Rattliff gained two spots and finished just behind Wilson, in eighth. ... The 40-lap feature was slowed by a lone caution on lap 29 for Jensen Ford and lasted 14 minutes, with 11 drivers completing the distance.
On the move: Billy Franklin of Calera, Ala., started 14th and finished ninth.
Winner's sponsors: Chilton’s Hatcher Motorsports Longhorn Chassis carries sponsorship from Hatcher’s Auto Sales, Riverwood Self Storage, Keltner Contracting & Services, Hatcher Properties, Tim Logan Racing, Quality Paint & Body Shop, Lucas Oil Center, NAPA Auto Parts and Fox Racing Shox.
